Why Central Ohio Water Is Hard, and What That Costs You

Why Central Ohio Water Is Hard, and What That Costs You

People move into a house here and notice their soap has stopped working the way it used to. That is not the plumbing and it is not anybody making a mistake. It is the ground the water came out of.

The water comes off limestone. Rain that soaks down through limestone and glacial gravel dissolves calcium and magnesium out of the rock on the way through. By the time it reaches a house it is a hard, mineral-heavy water, and treatment upstream does not take all of that back out.

Hardness is not a health problem. It is a cost problem. Calcium comes out of solution as scale wherever water is heated or sits still: inside the water heater, inside the dishwasher, inside the coffee maker, on the shower head. A scaled water heater works harder to heat the same water and it fails earlier than it should. None of that arrives as a bill labelled "hard water", which is exactly why it goes unnoticed for years.

Taste and smell are a separate thing. A chlorine taste on a city supply and a rotten-egg smell on a rural one are two different complaints, and neither of them is hardness. Carbon filtration takes care of the taste. Odor and staining usually need staged treatment rather than a softener on its own.

Winter does not help. Cold incoming water means longer, hotter showers and a water heater working harder for more of the year, which is more of exactly the conditions that leave scale behind.

What actually fixes it. Softening addresses the hardness, carbon addresses the taste and smell, and reverse osmosis at the sink addresses what you drink and cook with. Which of the three you need depends on your house and your water, and the only way to know is to test it. That is where we start when we come out.
